The varsity girls basketball team hosted the Rock Creek Lions on Friday, November 15th.

The Bulldogs came out hot jumping on the Lions early and controlled a 9 point lead at the end of the first quarter. Cannelton continued playing strong both offensively and defensively through the second quarter and secured a 28-14 lead at the half. The Lions couldn’t get much going against the Bulldogs on the offensive end, and Rock Creek’s struggles on offense continued in the second half. Cannelton continued to stretch the lead in the third quarter outscoring the Lions 13-6.

The Bulldogs pulled away with the win over the Lions with a final score of 49-28.

Freshman Kendall Hale scored 30 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, leading Cannelton in both categories. Hannah Price added 7 points, with two 3-point field goals made. Charlotte Entwistle lead the Bulldogs in assists with 4, and added in 6 points to the Bulldogs’ total.

Cannelton was able to hold the Lions to 22 percent from the field, forced 19 turnovers, and totaled 6 blocks.

There were a lot of bright spots on the defensive end for the Bulldogs, but the effort stood out the most the Coach Brian Garrett. When asked about what he was most happy about on the defensive end, Coach Garrett said, “We outplayed them on both ends of the floor. We only gave up 28 points.”

I asked Coach Garrett what was the biggest factor that lead to the Bulldogs success against the Lions, and replied, “We got off to a good start, we made shots early and got stops early. The players played with more confidence.”

There is always room for improvement for any team, and committing less turnovers is a big focus for Coach Garrett and his team this season. Garrett added, “Ball security is always going to be an area of concern.” Cannelton had a total of 14 turnovers in the win against the Lions, which Garrett said was “entirely too many.”

The Lady Bulldogs next head to Borden to take on the Braves on Saturday, November 16th. Be sure to check back here for all your Cannelton Bulldogs sports updates.
