On Wednesday, October 2nd the Cannelton High School volleyball team traveled to Evansville Christian to take on the Eagles in a Southern Roads Conference matchup. The JV came out strong by winning the first set of the match 25-24. After losing the first match, Evansville Christian regrouped and won the final two sets of the match, 18-25 and 12-15. Taryn Powers led the Bulldogs with 8 aces and contributed 4 kills. Emily Eigel added 5 aces in the loss to the Eagles.

The varsity match started out with the Bulldogs playing the Eagles close but falling just short in the first set 23-25. Cannelton Head Coach Allicyn Garrett said that the team “came out flat” after the first set and “struggled to ever recover.” The Bulldogs lost the following two sets 6-25 and 11-25.

Tory Thomas led the Bulldogs with 3 aces, and Megan Powers added 1 ace. Kendall Hale led the team with 5 kills, Brinna Parker had 2 kills, and Thomas, Powers, and Maggie Dawson each had 1 kill. Setter Kendra Anastasiades totaled 10 assists.

Powers led Cannelton with 15 digs and Mariah Rainbolt added 11 digs.

When asked about what attributed to the 3-0 loss against the Eagles, Garrett said “We would pull everything together too late. We decided to play our game of volleyball and play as a team too late.”

The Bulldogs will host the Eagles on Monday, October 7th, but their focus now shifts toward the Wolfpack as the JV and varsity will head to Crawford County on October 3rd for their volleyball matchup.
